How much does a custom plush toy cost?

It's the first question almost every buyer asks, and the honest answer is a range: most custom plush toys land somewhere between USD 2 and USD 50 per piece. That spread is wide because a 10 cm plush keychain and a 90 cm mascot with a removable outfit are barely the same product.

Rather than guess, it helps to understand what a plush factory is actually pricing. Five things move your unit cost more than anything else.

1. Size is the biggest single driver

Plush cost scales with material volume, and material volume scales fast. Going from 20 cm to 40 cm doesn't double your fabric and filling — it roughly quadruples the surface area and can multiply the stuffing by more. Larger plush also takes longer to sew, needs more careful shaping, and occupies far more shipping volume per carton.

If your budget is tight, shrinking a design from 30 cm to 20 cm is usually the single most effective change you can make. Most promotional and retail plush sits between 15 cm and 30 cm for exactly this reason.

2. Fabric and filling

Standard short-pile plush is the economical baseline. Minky, long-pile fur, corduroy and specialty faux furs cost more per metre and can be slower to cut and sew because pile direction has to be respected across every panel.

Filling matters too. PP cotton is standard; PE pellets add weight for a beanie-style base and add both material cost and an extra production step.

3. How much detail the design carries

A plush with an embroidered face, three fabric colours and no accessories is quick to build. Every additional element — extra colour blocks, appliqué, screen printing, embroidered logos, removable clothing, hats, hang tags, keyring hardware — adds cutting, sewing and assembly labour.

This is where a good factory earns its keep. We regularly suggest small changes that preserve the character but remove a whole production step, and it is not unusual to take 10–15% out of a unit price that way without the finished plush looking any different.

4. Order quantity

Setup work — pattern-making, embroidery digitising, print screens, sample rounds — is largely fixed. Spread across 100 pieces it's a meaningful share of your unit cost; spread across 3,000 it nearly disappears.

Our MOQ is 100 pieces per design, which is deliberately low so startups, crowdfunding projects and small brands can launch at all. But expect the per-unit price to drop noticeably at 500, 1,000 and 3,000 pieces. If you're planning a reorder anyway, ask for tiered pricing up front.

5. Packaging and compliance

A polybag is cheap. Printed header cards, hang tags, gift boxes and retail-ready cartons are not, and neither is third-party lab testing — though if you're selling into the EU or US you'll need it regardless.

Budget for compliance early. EN71, ASTM F963 and CPSIA testing is a real line item, and discovering it after you've priced your retail margin is a painful way to learn.

What a quote should contain

A quote that's just one number isn't much use. Ask any factory to break out the following, so you can see which lever to pull if the total is too high:

• Unit price at two or three quantity tiers
• One-off sample and mould/pattern charges, stated separately
• Packaging cost per piece
• Lab testing cost, if required for your market
• Carton dimensions and total shipping volume (this drives freight)
• Lead times for sample and bulk, with dates

A realistic timeline

Pricing and scheduling are linked — rush work costs more. In normal conditions expect roughly 7–10 days for a sample once the design is confirmed, then 25–35 days for bulk production, plus shipping. Sea freight is far cheaper than air but adds weeks, so build it into your launch date rather than paying to compress it later.
